My name is Anthony Bowleg Jr. a proud Lion of the great Florida Memorial University. As a freshman, my experience here has went extremely well so far. The campus is a good size and is walking distance. The people here are very nice and helpful, including a large number of bahamians. Here there are small class sizes, therefore seeking a better hands on interactions with professors. University life at FMU have shown me ways in which I can better myself as a young man, moreover directing me in the path of becoming an airline pilot. “In Order To Fulfill Your Dreams, You Must Fly Beyond Your Horizon” Anthony Bowleg Jr.
My name is Randisha Johnson, a freshman at Monroe College and also an extremely proud 2018 Public School Scholar. From I got a glimpse at all of the colleges this prestigious program had to offer, I knew that Monroe College was the place for me to go. Not only is it a private college with small sized classes, but it’s also placed in a suburban area where everything is in a walking distance. That was just a synopsis of what I got from their website, but when I actually arrived to the institution, they had exceed every single expectation. From the brilliant and sociable professors, to the ongoing activities that take place each week. This college offers a huge amount of love to the international student so that we can feel at home away from home, and I must say, they have done a stellar job at that. Words can not even begin to explain how grateful I am for receiving this award that granted me the ability to explore such diverse opportunities and further my education in a new environment. A thought that keeps me grounded and reminds me of how fortunate I am with this scholarship is. “To whom much is given, much is required.”
The university life has been great for me so far. I’m living in a double room and getting along with my roommate quite well. The campus is so nice and it’s not too big but also not small and congested. The only problem I have with the residence is sometimes the wait on elevators. The food is always not the best but I’m not complaining. Ive made a few good friends and we hang out fairly a lot. Classes are going great. I’m managing my time well and not getting overwhelmed with work. I’m so thankful for the PSSP award because without it I wouldn’t be here at SMU.
Adjusting to university life was somewhat challenging at first, being an international student and having to adapt to an American academic curriculum. I admit that I was a little afraid at first of all of the projects and exams that came with being an engineer. However that fear quickly went away with all of the new friends I made: some being from as far away as New York, Arizona, Texas, and even within the state of Florida. I really enjoy the school pride here, and UM being a great football school has allowed me to embrace some of the American culture and experience the true joy of being a Hurricane at live football games with my fellow freshman. However, I never forget my Bahamian heritage as I constantly wear clothes of aquamarine, gold, and black to remind myself of where I came from. All in all, I really enjoy the experience of being a college student!
The foundation has sent over 30 first in their family to go to college this year!
